The city of New York is experiencing the largest outage of the year, with no power.
A major city in the United States, New York’s blackout is not being handled by local government.
The blackout, which started at 5:30 a.m.
CT on Tuesday and has been affecting the entire city, has caused extensive damage to businesses and infrastructure, with multiple reports of power lines being cut, power lines collapsing, and power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of customers.
“The problem is there’s a lot of power out in this city,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters Wednesday.
“There’s an outage across the entire borough of New Yorkers.”
The blackout is also impacting the availability of services like social media, and many people have reported that their internet service is not working as expected.
“We’ve had intermittent service, but we have service to a large portion of our customers,” Verizon Communications said in a statement Wednesday.
In a statement, Verizon Wireless said it is working to restore service as quickly as possible.
Verizons customer service representatives have been trying to contact affected customers.
Verizon said that it is currently working with city and state officials to restore connectivity to customers.
The New York Police Department said the city is working with contractors to restore power to customers in the city, and that police have set up a temporary shelter in Times Square.
Several hundred thousand New Yorkers are reportedly without power in the Big Apple, according to The New York Times.
Officials are calling on residents to stay at home and avoid the streets.
At least 10 million people in the US have been without power.
